Philosophy and Ecology

Philosophy the key to the solution to ecological problems? Changing our worldview as well as our world for the better.

The ecological crisis faced by the human race is primarily a failure of philosophy, and only secondarily one of behaviour. Our misunderstanding of our own nature, our place in the universe, and what constitutes a good life has led with terrible logic to our present situation. Valiant attempts to address the emerging urgent ecological problems simply by urging the world's population to consume less are likely to fall far short of what is required: unless we can promote a positive alternative to the consumption of material things through what the Platonists called the life of contemplative knowledge, the crisis will deepen. This lecture looks at what such a life has to offer, not only with regard to the natural world, but also with regard to human society. After the lecture there will be time set aside for discussion.
