Because human life involves continual choices, clearly a cultivation of wisdom is always beneficial - but what does this mean?
Philosophy means "the love of wisdom" and is fundamental to human life. Human life is a continual series of choices: the more our choices are characterised by wisdom the happier we are, and the more we are able to play our part well in the drama of the universe. It may seem that philosophy is only for the clever, and for those who have learnt the jargon of philosophy, but this is not so - it is for everyone, regardless of age, race, sex, abilities, and indeed all the boxes in which we tend to put ourselves and others. How can the ordinary person go about a systematic exploration of the greatest of all human arts and sciences? This final lecture looks at the Platonic path, which is as much about the heart as it is about the mind, and as much about beauty as it is of truth. After the lecture there will be time set aside for discussion.
