By Dr Joan Oates - The McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research
Tell Brak (ancient Nagar) was one of the great cities of northern Mesopotamia and is one of the earliest urban centres known.
The lecture describes major discoveries from the third millennium city, and then focuses on two current projects:
(1) a unique 4th/5th millennium BC archaeological sequence that is providing new insights into the origins of Mesopotamian urbanism, and
(2) an intensive survey of the city's wider landscape using newly available satellite imagery.
