Kate Humble explores life in Afghanistan’s far northeast

BBC presenter, Kate Humble, travelled with Wild Frontiers into the Wakhan Corridor region of Afghanistan last summer to experience the reality of life this remote mountain wilderness.

Kate will share her experience of trekking in the far northeast arm of this contentious destination during a lecture at the Royal Geographical Society in London on Tuesday, 16 February 2010.
She will be joined by Wakhan expert, Andy Miller, to give an in-depth insight into the region and the modest, tranquil life of its people, far from the plight of other war-torn provinces of the country.
The Wakhan Corridor is a narrow strip of land that once formed the buffer zone between the British and Russian Empires. It was of immense strategic importance during the 19th century Great Game, though today the area, inhabited predominantly by Wakhi herdsmen, is remote, peaceful and blessed with some of the finest mountain scenery the world has to offer.
Kate Humble travelled to Afghanistan with adventure travel company, Wild Frontiers, who are helping to promote responsible tourism in the region.
All proceeds from the event will aid the Wild Frontiers Charitable Foundation, which supports NGOs and Wild Frontiers own community projects in the countries they visit.
