Vice-Dean, School of Medicine, Cardiff University. Ilora Finlay is Vice Dean in the School of Medicine, Cardiff University. She is Professor of Palliative Medicine and has worked with Marie Curie Cancer Care since 1987.
She was a member of the Expert Advisory Committee on Cancers to the Chief Medical Officers of England and Wales, producing the âCalman Hineâ report in 1995 and was Welsh Woman of the Year 1996-97.
Since her elevation to a Peerage in 2001, Baroness Finlay has been actively involved in debates on health issues, particularly the Tobacco Advertising Act.
As a Member of the Select Committee on Science and Technology, she has contributed to the enquiries: âFighting infectionâ and âSETting the Regional Agendaâ, both published in July 2003.
She is on the select committee for the Assisted Dying of the Terminally Ill Bill and has been actively involved in drafting the Mental Capacity Bill Guidance.
Baroness Finlay is on the international scientific expert panel of the Cicely Saunders Foundation and the Ethics and Governance Council of UK Biobank.
She is also President of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists, of MS Cymru and Patron of Shalom Hospice, Wales.
She has published and lectured widely on palliative care and researched aspects of cancer palliative care.
She established the internationally renowned Diploma/ MSc courses in palliative medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine, from which more than 800 senior clinicians worldwide have graduated.
