Professor David Wilson, Dean of the Faculty of Dusiness and Law at De Montfort University gives his inaugural lecture.
The governing of localities has become increasingly complex in recent years: elected local government today is but one part of a mosaic of agencies involved in local policy making including local businesses, community organisations and faith groups. Far from being dull, modern local governance is a fascinating arena for the politics that affect everyone on a day-to-day basis. In this lecture Professor David Wilson examines the costs and benefits of the advent of local governance and the implications for effective policy making. While he argues that there is an excessive bias towards central control, he counsels against sweeping generalisations which fail to draw out the importance of âplaceâ and the significance of local political culture.
Professor Wilson obtained his PhD from the University of Warwick and his specialist area of teaching and research is public sector management, notably local government. David has authored half a dozen books, most recently: British Local Government into the 21st Century (with Gerry Stoker); Local Government in the United Kingdom (with Chris Game). Additionally, he has written articles in leading journals such as Public Administration, Political Studies, British Journal of Political Science, Local Government Studies and is on the editorial board of several publications.
