LSE Housing & Communities, LSE Cities and Joseph Rowntree Foundation public discussion
This discussion will debate the issues arising from a new book Phoenix Cities which examines seven cities from very different regions of the EU, comparing them with the US experience. Their dramatic decline, intense recovery efforts and actual progress on the ground underline the significance of public underpinning in times of crisis. Innovative enterprises, new-style city leadership, special neighbourhood programme, skills development, environmental reclamation are all explored. The American experience shows that cities left largely to their own devices deliver a slower, more uncertain recovery. The discussion will explore where next for Phoenix Cities, given the economic shocks, the pressures of climate change and the social inequalities that sharply divide these recovering cities.
This discussion celebrates the launch of Anne Power, Jörg Plöger & Astrid Winker's new book Phoenix Cities: The fall and rise of great industrial cities|.
Richard Rogers has gained international reknown as an architect and urbanist. He is the 2007 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate, recipient of the 2006 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement (La Biennale di Venezia) and the 1985 RIBA Gold Medal. Bruce Katz is a Vice President at the Brookings Institution and founding Director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. The program seeks to redefine the challenges facing cities and metropolitan areas by publishing cutting-edge research on major demographic, market, development, and governance trends. Anne Power became a Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics in 1996 and is Head of LSE Housing and Communities, a research group within the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion. Julia Unwin was appointed Chief Executive of the Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust in January 2007.
