LSE Global Governance public discussion
Chaired by distinguished UN diplomat and envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, experts on Afghanistan will discuss the current situation in that country and possibilities for its future during a time of disintegrating support for western military involvement and a resurgent Taliban.
Wazhma Frogh is an Afghan human rights activist, gender and development specialist and recipient of the 2009 Internationaal Woman of Courage Award, as well as a Chevening Scholar in International Development Law and Human Rights at Warwick University.
David Kilcullen is an author and a consultant on counterinsurgency and counterterrorism. He is a former Australian Army officer who has served as an advisor to US Army General David Petraeus in Iraq.
Horia Mosadiq is a journalist and human rights activist and also a researcher with Amnesty International on Afghanistan.
Michael Semple is a regional specialist on Afghanistan and Pakistan with 25 years experience in the two countries. He has worked in Afghanistan since 1989, most recently as Deputy to the EU Special Representative for Afghanistan.
Lakhdar Brahimi was foreign minister of Algeria (1991-93) and prior to that ambassador to the UK (1971-79). He mediated the end of the Civil War in Lebanon (1988-91) and headed UN Missions in South Africa, Haiti, Afghanistan and Iraq. Lakhdar Brahimi is now a member of "The Elders", a group created at the initiative of Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel and chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu
