Professor Katherine Huddersman, Professor of Environmental Chemistry at De Montfort University gives her inaugural lecture.
Waste water treatment technologies focus on the removal of contaminants by adsorption or filtration others on biological degradation. Professor Katherine Huddersmanâs work has focussed on the oxidative decomposition of organic contaminants to more harmless substances suitable for discharge to surface waters. Where her work differs from other similar treatments is that the catalyst is fixed to an open knitted polymer support giving excellent engineering properties and therefore attractive to industrial application. In this lecture the chemical reactions taking place on the catalyst will be described, as well as, examples of the catalyst in action in field trials for a Water Municipal to remove very low concentrations of oestrogens. Other applications being developed are the antimicrobial activities of the catalyst, particularly towards spores, such as, C. difficile which are very resistant to disinfection.
Katherine Huddersman became Professor of Environmental Chemistry in 2007 having joined De Montfort University as a lecturer in 1989 from a Research Fellowship in Chemistry at Imperial College, London. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and also has past experience of teaching science in schools gaining a teaching certificate. She was a member of the British Association of Science Media Fellow and reached the Final round of the Research Councils Business Plan competition.
