If popular representations are to be believed the behaviour of many of our teenagers is worsening rapidly. What’s more, the responsibility for all this is often laid to rest at the door of parents whose confidence is severely depleted.

Caring for adolescents is often challenging at the best of times, but when young people choose the troubled or troublesome route to adulthood they stretch their parents’ resources to the limit. Caring professions are beginning to take up the challenge of supporting such parents, but in doing so often meet barriers of resistance, anger and despair which hinder their effectiveness.
