Philosophy & the Arts

Philosophers who have influenced great art in the modern Western world will be a matter for general discussion.

Courses and textbooks on the history of Western philosophy tend to focus on the influence philosophers have had on natural science, politics, economics, theology, and other sciences. Less attention has been paid to the influence philosophy has had on visual art, music, and literature. This course will explore a few examples of intersections between philosophy and the arts. Philosophers who have influenced great art in the modern Western world form an alternative tradition. This and its implications, will be a matter for general discussion during the course.
