This course will examine the social, cultural and political history of the Jewish people over the past century.
In what has been an era of unprecedented opportunities, challenges and dangers, Jews have gained rights of equality virtually everywhere; they have been the principal victims of the most savage onslaught in human history; they have witnessed, against all the odds, the exhilarating and controversial reestablishment of their own state; and they continue, in the Middle East, to be the central focus of the world's most intractable political nightmare. This course will examine the social, cultural and political history of the Jewish people over the past century shedding light on the bewildering, harrowing and often breathtaking modern experience of the Jewish people - an experience that has implications which go far beyond the Jewish world.
