This talk will outline the way in which electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation have uncovered the structural secrets of nanoporous crystals.
This talk combines excerpts from the speakerâs own scientific adventures with personal reflections of, and indebtedness to, W H and W L Bragg, Sir Gordon Cox, Max Perutz, John Kendrew, David Phillips (of Ellesmere) and George Porter. It will also pay homage to Bill Coates, who served as a brilliant lecture-demonstrator and general factotum to five Directors of the RI (Rideal, Andrade, Bragg, Porter and Thomas). In addition, the speaker will outline the way in which electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation have uncovered the structural secrets (and architectonic beauty) of nanoporous crystals; and, in so doing, made possible the design and construction of a range of highly active and selective solid catalysts, which offer environmentally benign methods of producing important chemical feedstocks, fabrics, fuel and pharmaceuticals.
