In this lecture, we will learn more about the social situation of women working in the theatre in this period.
In this lecture, Helga Brandt, Heritage Manager of the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds and Lynn Whitehead, actress and Head of Learning at the Theatre Royal will transport us back to the theatre of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The Theatre Royal is Britain's only surviving example of a Regency playhouse, and in this lecture, we will learn more about the social situation of women working in the theatre in this period.The lecture features celebrated Georgian actresses such as Sarah Siddons and Dorothy Jordan, famously portrayed as Melpomene and Thalia, the muses of tragedy and comedy. Their voices, and many others who trod the boards in the provinces as well as in London, will be brought to life.
