"You're Geography!": Conceptualising political acceptability in fifth-century BC Athens

Eleanor O'Kell will be showing us maps and passages of texts to support her talk. This talk requires no knowledge of Athenian politics, history or the particular ancient comedy discussed and will feature a virtual tour of political and sexual places of interest in fifth-century Athens.

Speaker: Eleanor O'Kell
Honorary Research Associate, Department of Classics, University of Leeds
"You're History!" is a phrase we use to represent that someone's influence is over so far as we are concerned, but some professions (e.g. the civil service) and cultures express this sentiment through geographical reference. Eleanor will be looking at the way fifth-century BC Athenians conceptualised their political landscape, particularly by referring to the geography of Athens when passing judgement on politicians - especially through insults. She will be looking (in translation) at examples from the highly politicised and satirical genre of Aristophanic comedy, to explore the ways that geography and gender combine to put politicians beyond the pale and undercut their effectiveness as speakers. This results in politicians undertaking a journey from an origin as speakers the public areas of the Assembly/agora to private, disreputable spaces associated with prostitution. Eleanor will be showing us maps and passages of texts to support her talk. This talk requires no knowledge of Athenian politics, history or the particular ancient comedy discussed and will feature a virtual tour of political and sexual places of interest in fifth-century Athens. All passages will be quoted in English translation; there will some strong language and references of a sexual nature! For her research Eleanor would be very grateful for suggestions of parallels from other periods culture in which geography plays a role in conveying disapproval.
