Doing drugs in British prisons

This lecture will look at how the attitudes to drug use and addiction have overloaded the prison system in the last 16 years.

The prison population in the UK is one of the highest per capita in Europe (Home Office, 2008). Since 1994 the population has doubled from 40,000
to over 82,000 in 2010. 90% of prisoners have mental health problems of which 80% are estimated to have problems with drug and alcohol use. This lecture will look at how the attitudes to drug use and addiction have overloaded the prison system in the last 16 years. Some of the issues covered include why the drug use happens, the prison drug market, the hazards and what is needed to prevent illegal drug use.
