Profressor Tim Lang

Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy, visits De Montfort University to give a free lecture as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series 2010.

Tim Lang has been Professor of Food Policy at City University's Centre for Food Policy since 2002. He was a hill farmer in Lancashire in the 1970s and for the last 30 years has engaged in public and academic research and debate about food policy. He was appointed a Commissioner on the UK Government’s Sustainable Development Commission in 2006 and to the Council of Food Policy Advisors in 2008. His latest book, written with City colleagues David Barling and Martin Caraher is Food Policy: integrating health, environment & society (Oxford University Press, 2009).

Tim was the founder and director of the London Food Commission in the 1980’s, which did some of the earliest work on additives, and the effect of food poverty among those with low incomes. He was the man who coined the term ‘food miles’ to describe the distance our groceries had to travel to reach us and his work made a major contribution to both the Food Safety Act of 1990 and the creation of the Food Standards Agency in 2000.
