Do Cubans live longer than Americans? Are Scandinavians happier than the British? Do Oscar winners live longer than other actors? Does capitalism cause mental illness? Does inequality lead to murder? In recent years, several influential booksâ”notably The Spirit Level, Happiness and Affluenzaâ”have called for radical political change to combat the effects of inequality, consumerism and economic growth. This lecture will take a fresh look at the evidence used to support the hypothesis that inequality is the main driver of health and social problems in developed societies.
Christopher Snowdon is the author of The Spirit Level Delusion (2010) and Velvet Glove, Iron Fist (2009). He writes for the online magazine Sp!ked and is an adjunct scholar at the Democracy Institute.
