Barbara Coombs Lee talks about how physician aid in dying has become a reality in three U.S. states.
In this public lecture, Barbara Coombs Lee, President of Compassion & Choices, the oldest and largest organisation advocating for choice at the end of life in the United States, will talk about how physician aid in dying has become a reality in three U.S. states and what it has meant to terminally ill patients and their families.
Issues around the end of life, the right to die well and assisted dying are key areas of debate in contemporary medical ethics. In the UK the organization Dying in Dignity campaigns for greater choice and control to alleviate suffering at the end of life. This lecture will provide insights into progress that is being made on these issues in certain regions of the U.S.
Barbara Coombs Lee practised as a nurse and physician assistant for 25 years before beginning a career in law and health policy. Since then she has devoted her professional life to individual choice and empowerment in health care. As a private attorney, as council to Oregon State Senate, as a managed care executive and finally as Chief Petitioner for Oregonâs Death with Dignity Act, she has championed initiatives that enable individuals to consider a full range of choices and be full participants in their health care decisions.
