Wildlife in a changing world: tracking the fate of declining vertebrates - a ZSL Science and Conservation Event
Proactive conservation action requires information on the status and trends of species. Therefore, keeping track of trends in animal populations is not only a vital tool for local conservation and research, but also can be used to inform global-level policy on the state of the environment.
Since its inception in 1998, the Living Planet Index has been used to track trends in vertebrate populations from terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems around the world. A biological analogue of a stock-market index, the Living Planet Index gives an indication of changes to the health of these ecosystems over time.
The latest global trends in vertebrate populations are examined to identify how human pressures have caused declines in biodiversity over the last 40 years and to explore how the tracking-trends approach has been applied to rapidly changing regions, such as the Arctic, and âprotected areasâ, which are the cornerstone of global conservation efforts.
Organised by Louise McRae, Institute of Zoology, ZSL.
This event in the 'Wildlife Conservation' series will begin at 6.00pm (doors from 5.00pm) and talks are scheduled to finish at 7.30pm; admission is free and open to everyone (no advance booking or registration required). This event will be held in the ZSL Meeting Rooms and seats will be on a first-come, first-served basis. A dinner with the speakers will follow this event and places must be booked in advance. A dinner booking form will be provided from the ZSL website shortly; please download for further information.
ZSL Science and Conservation Events: An essential part of ZSL's work is to communicate relevant, high-quality zoological and conservation science. The integrated ZSL Science and Conservation Events programme includes Symposia, and the new 'Wildlife Conservation' and 'Communicating Science' series. Topics cover a wide variety of zoological and conservation themes, and international experts present and discuss their research
