Sustainable palm oil: reality, aspiration or fantasy? Mapping a way forward - two-day ZSL symposium
This symposium will address the gap between the concept of 'sustainable' palm oil production and the reality of integrating this crop into sustainably managed landscapes. Leading scientists, policy makers, civil-society organizations and industry players will examine the key ecological, social and economic factors associated with this globally important crop, aiming to reach a common understanding of what constitutes responsible production.
It is approaching a decade since the launch of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, a multi-stakeholder organization established to define and realize a role for the palm oil industry within landscapes that could be considered sustainable. This symposium will build on the momentum generated by the RSPO to explore the potential of various mechanisms, organisations and stakeholders to implement the practical actions needed to make this a reality.
