To a Mountain in Tibet

The celebrated travel writer Colin Thubron gives an illustrated talk on his recent journey to Mount Kailas in Tibet.

This most sacred of the world’s mountains is said to be the mythical Mount Mera, centre of the universe. Isolated beyond the central Himalayas, Mount Kailas is claimed to be the source of the universe created from cosmic waters and the mind of Brahma. It is revered in both Hindu and Buddhist legends, while its location, close to the sources of the four main rivers that flow across the Indian sub-continent, contributes to its mystique.

Its summit has never been scaled, but for centuries the mountain has been ritually circled by Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Colin Thubron joins them after an arduous trek from Nepal, through the high passes of Tibet, to the magical lakes beneath the slopes of Kailas itself.

The talk will coincide with the publication of his new book 'To a mountain in Tibet', signed copies of which will be on sale at a discount on the published price. Three of his earlier central Asian titles will also be available.

In aid of Bookpower, the only UK charity which makes available affordable, unabridged, quality higher education textbooks, tailored to institutional curricula and reading lists in the developing world. In the thirteen years since its foundation, BookPower has made available 675,950 copies of 44 titles to 39 countries.
