What do people mean when they claim that summative assessment âdamages learningâ? And what are the arguments of groups which champion greater reliance on âAssessment for Learningâ? Is it possible to say that some assessment regimes support learning better than others? And if that is so, is it mainly a matter of getting summative assessment over and done with as quickly and painlessly as possible? Or is there more to say about the positive effect of examinations and external assessments on learning?
