Doing Justice

Professor of Social Work Research, Prof Roger Smith will trace a personal, professional and political journey through the terrain of youth justice over the past thirty years.

Roger Smith is Professor of Social Work Research and Head of Research in the School of Applied Social Sciences at DMU. He graduated in Sociology from the University of Kent in 1974, before going on to pursue a career in social work with offenders. He qualified in social work at the University of Warwick in 1980, going on to lead a pioneering juvenile diversion project. After that, he held a senior policy role with a national voluntary organisation, before returning to the academic world at the University of Leicester in 1980. He has researched and published widely on the subjects of youth justice, participative research and social work theory and methods.

His lecture this evening will trace a personal, professional and political journey through the terrain of youth justice over the past thirty years. On the way, the complexities, challenges and contradictions of ideas, policy and practice will be explored critically, in order to demonstrate the underlying need for radical thinking and creative practice in relation to youth crime. It is no longer enough to be constrained either by naive populism or well-meaning liberalism, if we are to address concerns about the problems of youth in ways which are fair, equitable and work in the best interests of all concerned. This lecture will demonstrate the fundamental importance of applying principles of social justice to this hotly contested area of concern.
