Professor of Product Design, Prof Peter Ford considers the changing face of technology both in design and in manufacturing

This inaugural lecture is a personal reflection on over 30 years of designing products. It will consider the changing face of technology both in design and in manufacturing, it will consider issues of culture in the context of national and international design and it will reflect on the role of design in business.

Peter Ford graduated from Leicester Polytechnic in 1983. He spent over 8 years with 2 of the UK’s leading design consultancies, the London based design group BIB (Butler Isherwood and Bartlett) and the Leicester based design group Jones Garrard (designers of the Eurostar). During this time he worked on a wide range of consumer, medical and industrial products for companies such as Minolta, Ferguson, Duracell and British Telecom, Black and Decker, 3M and Pfizer.

Peter joined De Montfort University in 1991 as a Senior Lecturer in Product Design. As well as helping develop the undergraduate programmes to their current high profile status he established the De Montfort University Design Unit, a unique design research group specialising in developing methods of helping companies small and large make better use of design in their businesses.
To date the Design Unit has helped hundreds of companies, increasing GVA into the region, creating jobs both in manufacturing and in the creative business sector through the development of a whole variety of products for national and international companies, many of them award winning, many of them patented.
