The Innaugural Gunn and Carter Lecture

Professor Chris Marriott, alumnus of DMU and former head the School of Pharmacy at King's College London delivers a free lecture.

With the launch of the Gunn and Carter Fellowship, De Montfort University is honouring the memory of two illustrious men who were committed to the education and welfare of their students.

Colin Gunn graduated from the Leicester School of Pharmacy in 1930 and became Head of School in 1942. He was Head for 27 years working closely with Sidney Carter who was his deputy for much of this time. Sidney had also studied at the School, graduating with a BPharm in 1943 before joining the staff in 1946. Between them, these two men helped give the school the reputation that it still enjoys today. Graduates taught by them lead influential careers, and have held leading positions in general practice pharmacy, the National Health Service, the pharmaceutical industry and academia.

One such graduate is Professor Chris Marriott (PhD Pharmacy, 1970), who was taught by both men. “Colin interviewed me then showed me round the department: later I learnt that this was how he treated all students. Sidney introduced me to research which is what I spent the rest of my career doing, so I’m very grateful for that.” Chris went on to lecture at Nottingham University, Brighton Polytechnic and King’s College London. As chair of the UK Heads of Schools of Pharmacy he helped to oversee the changes from the three to four year course.

We are delighted to welcome Chris back to the Leicester School of Pharmacy to give the inaugural Gunn and Carter Fellowship Lecture entitled “Leicester School of Pharmacy – my Gateway to the airways”. As a fellow graduate of the School, we would be pleased to see you there.
