By sifting through centuries of European art, this series will find answers to the question: what exactly have artists let themselves in for when they rework some of the greatest poems and stories ever written ?
Is it an act of homage, or rivalry, or translation, or all three at once? And when a poet takes on a painting, is the artistic challenge the same, only in reverse ?
A hundred stories to choose from
Boccaccio’s device - ten young people escape from the plague in Florence and instead go on a ten-day house-party storytelling crawl in Fiesole - presents painters with an embarrassment of riches. Botticelli takes up the challenge twice. Does he win first and second prizes, or is the competition too strong ?
