The rise & fall of 'Queen Dick' Richard Cromwell & his Protectorate

A talk by Professor Peter Gaunt of the University of Chester

Oliver Cromwell's son Richard (1626-1712) succeeded his father smoothly and without opposition. However Richard was quickly beset by problems and was removed from office in a military coup in spring 1659. This lecture reassesses Richard questioning the general portrayal of him as naive & inexperienced & unfit for office
