Last of the Big Beasts: the life, death and resurrection of modern monuments

Clementine Cecil: Narkomfin Flats, Moscow (Moisei Ginzburg and Ignaty Milinis, engineer: Sergei Prokhorov), 1928–30

The Narkomfin building was built at the peak of the Soviet avant-garde as an experiment in semi-communal living, for the workers of the first Soviet Finance Ministry. Alexei Ginzburg, grandson of the architect, has created a restoration project to convert the building into a hotel, but a dispute between the City Government, a large Moscow construction company, and the building's last inhabitants, is obstructing progress. The building, including Milyutin's rooftop penthouse, is in an advanced state of dilapidation.
