Last of the Big Beasts: the life, death and resurrection of modern monuments

Alan Powers: Brynmawr Rubber Factory, Brynmawr, Gwent (Architects’ Co-operative Partnership with Ove Arup), 1947–51 (demolished 2001)


Built as a dramatic gesture of help towards a then-beleaguered Welsh community, Brynmawr Rubber Factory was fêted for its innovative shell-concrete construction. The first post-war building in Wales to be listed, it was demolished in 2001 after a protracted conservation battle.
