How did people live in the great Imperial City? 1837-1901 was a period of radical change: suburbs, industry, commerce, speed, immigration and new lifestyles. Despite the emergence of a solid middle class, there were appalling divisions in the class structure. But so outstanding was progress that much of Victorian achievement remains the infrastructure of London today.
THE GREAT EXHIBITION 1851 - LECTURE
The first world exhibition was held in Hyde Park displaying “the arts and industries of all nationsâ€. This lecture will explore the Crystal Palace, London’s first modern building, the range of art, design and invention displayed within it and its educational theme, which attracted millions and which was perpetuated in the South Kensington cultural institutions.
