How did people live in the great Imperial City? 1837-1901 was a period of radical change: suburbs, industry, commerce, speed, immigration and new lifestyles. Despite the emergence of a solid middle class, there were appalling divisions in the class structure. But so outstanding was progress that much of Victorian achievement remains the infrastructure of London today.
BETHNAL GREEN AND THE MUSEUM OF CHILDHOOD - WALK
Bethnal Green, in Victorian times, was the centre of deprivation. Much of the area has been modernised after wartime bombing, but the core of the original village survives. Our tour will include Soaneâs church of St John, the fascinating Museum of Childhood, and surviving houses leading to Victoria Park, from 1845 the first planned open amenity for the âlabouring classesâ.
