How did people live in the great Imperial City? 1837-1901 was a period of radical change: suburbs, industry, commerce, speed, immigration and new lifestyles. Despite the emergence of a solid middle class, there were appalling divisions in the class structure. But so outstanding was progress that much of Victorian achievement remains the infrastructure of London today.
THE DESPERATE NEED FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT - LECTURE
As London spread, distances between work and residence grew longer. In 1830 only the wealthy could afford the transport of the stage coach: all others walked. The economy of the city and the nation depended on fast, affordable mobility. This lecture will follow the evolution of the horse-drawn omnibus, the coming of the railways, the first underground railway in the world, and the horse-tram.
