De Montfort University will be holding a lecture on Tuesday 5 April 2011 in celebration of International Women's Day. Professor Paul Walton of York University will explore the issues relating to equality for women within the field of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET).
The lecture on Tuesday 5 April 2011 will start at 6pm and takes place in the Queens Building. A drinks reception will follow the lecture as well as the opportunity to view our new digital photo gallery which celebrates the significant contribution DMUâs female staff are making within the fields of Science, Engineering and Technology.
Professor Walton was Head of the Chemistry department at York University from 2004 until 2010. The department is one of the largest in the UK and is currently the only department to hold an Athena SWAN Gold Award in recognition for its good employment practice for Women in SET. In the lecture, Professor Walton will examine why men continue to occupy the top jobs, why men continue to enjoy much higher salaries and why women still find it harder to get promoted. This talk will also explore what to do about it and demonstrate that with a small amount of determination and understanding, much progress can be made.
Places for the lecture must be booked by contacting the Events Office on 0116 257 7452 or via email: eventsoffice@dmu.ac.uk. There are limited places available, so if you are interested, do please book early to avoid disappointment.
