Colin Thubron follows the pilgrimage route through Tibet to Mount Kailas, the most sacred of the worldâs mountains.
Colin Thubron is acclaimed as one of the greatest living travel writers, and one of the most private. In his new book, To A Mountain in Tibet, he follows the pilgrimage route through Tibet to Mount Kailas, the most sacred of the worldâs mountains.
Its summit has never been scaled, but for centuries the mountain has been ritually circled by Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. On this âsecular pilgrimageâ Thubron makes an arduous trek from Nepal, through the high passes of Tibet, to the magical lakes beneath the slopes of Kailas itself. He talks with pilgrims, villagers and monks and tells the stories of exiles and of eccentric explorers from the West.
A haunting and beautiful travel book, it is also a very personal journey, undertaken shortly after the death of his mother, and interwoven with his own reflections on love, grief, solitude and the question of whether a journey can ever be a cure.
