Saying it Like it is – Culture, Free Speech, Power

Hanif Kureishi in conversation with Kenan Malik.

Hanif Kureishi has long chronicled the changing experience of Asians in Britain through his novels such as My Beautiful Laundrette and The Buddha of Suburbia. His new collection begins with the introduction to My Beautiful Laundrette which allowed him to expand upon the questions posed by the film – about race, class, sexuality. Over the past decades he has developed these ideas as Islam’s relation to the West has become one of the burning issues of our age.

As with his fictional work, these essays display Kureishi's ability to capture the temper of the times. His conversation with Kenan Malik, himself an outspoken commentator, is sure to provoke an intense and fascinating discussion.
