Bateman commissioned botanical drawings of orchids for his books. Many of which became the source of design for ceramics.
Pam Woolliscroft, former Curator of the Spode Museum Trust in Stoke-on-Trent, takes a look at orchids from the unusual angle of a Spode Bateman Connection. There follows a look at botanical influences on Spode designs, the Bateman connections and specific association with The Orchidaceae of Guatemala & Mexico. Pam documents the discovery of fragments of the Bateman book, its identification and rescue.
