The Western mass media prides itself on its freedom and its independence, while at the same time the public is sceptical and distrustful of the media. Steering a course between liberal triumphalism and the conspiracy theory approach to history, radical academic Noam Chomsky has over the last 50 years built up thousands of pages of documentation to support his "Propaganda Model" of the Western mass media. How does a free market in ideas result in the production of state propaganda?
Milan Rai is the author of Chomsky's Politics, and a contributor to the Cambridge Companion to Chomsky, as well as co-editor of Peace News.
