Sustainability on Trial

The sustainable development paradox is counter-industrial, counter-intuitive and counter-capitalist. We live in a time of unequalled prosperity, education and communication.

Tuesday 19th April 2011 - 7.30pm @ Keyworth Centre

Sustainability on Trial...
A Future Noir Debate

Austin Williams, Director of Future Cities
Matt Price, Comedian from Mirth Control
Andrew Haigh, Sustainable Strategist at Foster + Partners
John Davies, Davis Langdon LLP

Sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, facilitated by environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

The sustainable development paradox is counter-industrial, counter-intuitive and counter-capitalist, what follows the reforming green zeal will be a post-industrial landscape of nanotech clean energy chastising the dirty chemical consumption of the dysfunctional present-history; a time, lest we forget, which gave us unequalled prosperity, education and communication.

Western Society is devoted to consumption, ownership, profit, and individual liberty which combine to effectively suppress the human desires for collective well-being, social growth and renewal. The debate will unravel what sustainability means for designers and engineers of our future civilisation, to challenge the accepted polemic, a subject overwhelmed by multiple definitions, misplaced truisms, and an emerging industry distorted by commercial interests.

Is sustainability the capitalist communism of the future?
