Crossing over Annan Water: A Scottish Ballad for Magical Journeys

Annan Water, you loom so deep and wide / I would cross over if you would stem the tide

Annan Water, you loom so deep and wide / I would cross over if you would stem the tide / I'll build a boat that I might ford the other side/ To reach the farthest shore / where my true love lies in wait for me. Tonight Michael Berman explores the haunting ballad of Annan Water; playing it, then unpacking themes, symbols and codes that arise it is treated as an account of a shamanic journey -- with spiritual lessons to be gleaned. Who dies in the crossing? Who survives, and why? Michael Berman holds a doctorate from University of Wales and works on shamanistic themes in both his scholarship and in his personal practice. This is his third night in a series on Scottish ballads. Publications include The Power of Metaphor, Nature of Shamanism, Shamanic Story, Shamanic Journeys through Daghestan and Shamanic Journeys through the Caucasus. To read: Ballad of Annan Water.
