LSEE Ghiţă Ionescu Memorial lecture
Traian Băsescu is president of Romania. He was first elected to the post in December 2004, and was re-elected to a second 5-year term in 2009. He has previously served as mayor of Bucharest, and minister of transportation in the Ciorbea, Vasile, Isărescu, Roman and Stolojan governments. Prior to joining the government, he was a marine officer and merchant navy captain for the Romanian commercial fleet, having graduated in 1976 from the 'Mircea cel Bătrân' Civil Maritime Institute.
Vladimir Tismăneanu is professor of comparative politics and director of the Center for the Study of Post-communist Societies, University of Maryland. He also serves as president of the scientific council of the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile, Bucharest.
This event is organized together with the Romanian Embassy, London, and with the generous support of the Romanian Cultural Institute. It forms part of the LSE European Institute - APCO Worldwide Perspectives on Europe Series and is coordinated by LSEE (LSE Research on South Eastern Europe).

This event is free and open to all, but a ticket is required. One ticket per person can be requested on Friday 27 May. LSE students and staff are able to collect one ticket from the New Academic Building SU shop, located on the Kingsway side of the building from 10.00am on Friday 27 May. Members of the public, LSE staff and alumni can request one ticket via the online ticket request form which will be live on the event weblisting after 10.00am on Friday 27 May. The ticket request form will be online for around an hour from going live. If after an hour we have received more requests than there are tickets available, the line will be closed, and tickets will be allocated on a random basis to those requests received. If after an hour we have received fewer requests than tickets available, the ticket line will stay open until all tickets have been allocated. Due to changes on the LSE website we can no longer control exactly when a page will update, so it may take a few minutes to appear. You may need to refresh your browser in order to view this link.
