Explore the ways in which the meal in art reveals our ideas about what and how we eat
From the profound significance of Last Supper images to the food-driven chaos of the battle between Carnival and Lent, the shared occasions of eating have run through visual art, providing an immediate point of contact and sympathy for the viewer. Intimate family meals, lavish celebrations, frugal repasts and even miraculous provisions of food are all depicted across different periods and styles, all striking a chord that goes deeper than just aesthetic appreciation. Explore the ways in which the meal in art, from the fish and chip van to the wedding feast at Cana, reveals our ideas about what and how we eat and the meanings we give to the social act of eating together.
