The metal, the mythology and the multitudinous meanings â“ silver is as much an atmosphere as a colour.
The metal, the mythology and the multitudinous meanings â“ silver is as much an atmosphere as a colour, associated with the light of the moon, cool hues, pale reflections and dazzling highlights. How can this be achieved in painting? This talk looks at naturalistic representations of silver (especially popular in Dutch still-life painting) as well as at the direct use of the metal in art, but it also follows the lunar allure of the moon, exploring nocturnal imagery lit by silvery beams, from Grimshawâs urban night scenes to manifestations of Diana the moon goddess.
