Sir Thomas Egerton: Keeper of the Queen's Conscience

Sir Thomas Egerton (1540 - 1617)


Born in Dodleston Cheshire, the illegitimate son of Sir Richard Egerton, educated at Brasenose Oxford & Lincoln's Inn - he rose to be Attorney General under Elizabeth I and Lord Chancellor under James I.A friend of the Earl of Essex he was one of those who prosecuted Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. He employed John Donne the metaphysical poet as his secretary.
