Discussion & Performance: This is Whitechapel: Basement Writers and Stepney Words

In the 1970s the publication of a book of pupils’ writings Stepney Words led to the sacking of teacher Chris Searle and a student counter-protest that made national headlines.

Forming out of this controversy, the Basement Writers was seen as an outlet for communication by many working class east Londoners. Reflecting on forgotten creative histories of east London, this event includes discussion, screenings and live reading performances around the area with former teacher Chris Searle, radio presenter Alan Dein and members of the group Alan Gilbey and Roger Mills.
