From Aksumawit to Zed: Ethiopian Embroidered Dress Designs

A look at the design of traditional embroidered dresses in Northern Ethiopia.

A look at the design of traditional embroidered dresses in Northern Ethiopia, from the nineteenth century dresses of Queen Terunesh up to the very latest high fashion designs from Aksum.

Aksum, long famed as a centre for traditional craftwork, is well known in Ethiopia for the quality of its hand embroidered dresses. In 2010 a study was made of the dress shops in Aksum and the way that they worked closely with local weavers to produce new embroidery designs. Over sixty samples of embroidery patterns were collected, with names ranging from Aksumawit to Zed, together with a number of best quality dresses.

Some of these very latest embroidery designs will be displayed and the biggest selling Ethiopian embroidery design of all time, which has sold many millions throughout the world, will be revealed.
