Bushido: yet another invented tradition

An examination of the term Bushido which is used to describe the samurai way of life in Japan.


This lecture investigates the origin of the term Bushido and comes to the conclusion that it is a modern concept created for a modern purpose. Claims for its antiquity are shown to be based on a conscious misreading of seventeenth century realities.
