Changing lives globally: technological innovation for health

Healthcare systems worldwide face new pressures compared to 20 years ago. The way in which we provide healthcare has to change

Life expectancy has increased dramatically, lifestyle disseases such as obesity are rife and non-communicable diseases such as diabetes are increasing in developing countries as well as in the West. We can't just build more hospitals or buy more beds: the whole way in which we provide healthcare has got to change. Lord Darzi was appointed Chairman of the Institute of Global Health Innovation 3 years ago, having spent 3 years as Parliamentary Under-secretary at the Department of Health. He currently holds the Paul Hamly Chair of Surgery at Imperial College; his main clinical and academic interest is in minimally invasive surgery and allied technologies and he leads a team who cover engineering and basic science research topics including biomedical engineering, medical image computing, robotics and clinical safety.
