Art of the Holocaust: Creativity In Extremis

A fascinating look at how the Holocaust has shaped art and how victims have expressed themselves through it.

This illustrated lecture will examine the extraordinary number and variety of artworks produced against all the odds by victims of the Nazi Holocaust. In so doing, it will address the motives for making images in the most inauspicious of circumstances, the broader context of their making and the ethical dilemmas faced by cultural historians in assessing these images’ status as testimony and/or aesthetic objects. The insights they provide into the relationship between trauma and creativity, and between work of art and historical document remain of crucial importance.

The lecture is based on a chapter of the same name in a new book by Monica Bohm-Duchen entitled Art and the Second World War, to be published by Lund Humphries (in association with Princeton University Press) in October 2013.

Monica Bohm-Duchen is an independent writer, lecturer, and curator. Her many publications include After Auschwitz: Responses to the Holocaust in Contemporary Art, and she teaches a course on Art and War: 1914 to the Present at Birkbeck, University of London and New York University London.
