Can shamanistic practices be transposed or reinvented in contemporary societies? Can we speak of the 'authentic' tranmission of such disciplines and techniques - or, conversely, of a 'native' Western tradition? The writer John Constable, in his John Crow persona, has worked with his spirit guide, The Goose, to establish a magical praxis at Cross Bones, London's outcasts' burial ground. In this talk he explores the inherently transgressive nature of 21st century urban shamanism, and how art, drama and poetry mediate its expression. He will perform selected channelled texts from his seminal work The Southwark Mysteries.
John Constable is a playwright, poet, performer and magical practitioner. His work includes the psychedelic comedy I Was An Alien Sex God, the stage adaptation of Gormenghast, and SPARE, a play on the life and work of Austin Osman Spare. His plays - and Secret Bankside, his book of unusual walks - are published by Oberon Books. He is best known for The Southwark Mysteries â“ an apocalyptic cycle of poems and plays ârevealed by The Goose to John Crowâ. Since 1996, John has conducted rituals and vigils at the Cross Bones cemetery and is working to establish a garden of remembrance on the site: www.crossbones.org.uk
